Iguaçu Falls photo guide: the Brazilian side, the light, rainbows, high water and drones
How to photograph the Iguaçu Falls from the Brazilian side: what ICMBio and Urbia Cataratas allow, opening hours and early entry, when rainbows appear, how high water closes the walkway, and drones.

The Iguaçu Falls photo session is a 30-minute shoot on the Brazilian trail of the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, priced from $150 for a couple, with the whole front of the falls across the river behind you. The Brazilian side is the side for the panorama: most of the falls stand in Argentina, and the best place to see them all at once is the opposite bank.
Two sides, two parks
The falls are shared by two national parks with two administrations. The Brazilian Parque Nacional do Iguaçu is managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), and visiting in the Polo Cataratas is run by the concessionaire Urbia Cataratas. The Argentine Parque Nacional Iguazú belongs to Argentina's national parks administration, which asks visitors to keep to the time slot on their ticket; its rules, tickets and currency are separate, and a session there is not something we book.
| Brazilian side | Argentine side | |
|---|---|---|
| What you see | The full front of the falls across the river | The falls from above and close up, including the Garganta del Diablo walkway |
| Trail | One trail of about 1 km, a walkway and a lift | Several circuits, much longer on foot |
| Best for | Couple and family portraits with the panorama behind | Close detail and the force of the water |
| Time needed | Half a day | A full day |
Most visitors do both, on different days. For portraits, the Brazilian trail is easier: it is short, its viewpoints face the falls, and a family with grandparents can manage it.
Hours, tickets and getting in early
Urbia Cataratas' site says the park opens every day of the year, from 9:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and from 8:30 to 16:00 at weekends. Its ticket page says tickets are sold only online, for a chosen date and time, and that the Brasil/Mercosul category is 10% cheaper than the Integral ticket for everyone else. The ticket includes the internal bus, a round trip of about 12 km, about 1 km of trail, the lift, the walkway and the main viewpoints.
The quietest light belongs to the Amanhecer nas Cataratas experience. The concessionaire's announcement of September 2026 runs it from Wednesday to Saturday, with exclusive boarding at 6:00, the trail and walkways before regular opening, breakfast afterwards and the rest of the day in the park. For a proposal or a couple session with nobody else in the frame, those four mornings are the dates we suggest first. The concessionaire also launched a sunset visit after closing time in 2024; its days have changed since, so we check the current calendar for your date.
Light and rainbows
The Brazilian trail looks west and south across the river, so the morning sun comes from behind the photographer and lights the falls head-on. That is also the condition for a rainbow: a bow forms in the spray when the sun is behind you and fairly low, which on this trail means the morning and the first half of the day. By mid-afternoon the light comes from the side and then from behind the falls, flattening the water and silhouetting the people in front of it.
| Mid-month, 2026 | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| January | 06:00 | 19:34 |
| April | 06:53 | 18:22 |
| July | 07:23 | 18:04 |
| October | 06:03 | 18:44 |
Those times come from US Naval Observatory tables for Foz do Iguaçu on Brasília time. In July the sun rises at 07:23, so the 6:00 sunrise visit starts in blue light and reaches the walkway as the first sun arrives; in January the sun is already high by regular opening. Every session ends wet: the walkway runs into the spray, so we bring cloths for the lens, and you should bring a light layer that can get soaked.
High water and the walkway
The volume of the river decides what you can reach. Urbia Cataratas' flood protocol closes the walkway over the river when the flow passes 8.5 million litres per second and keeps rising, and removes its railings between 9 and 12 million litres per second so the water can pass. On 12 October 2026 the flow reached 11.8 million litres per second, the highest of the year to that date, and the walkway, the lower Espaço Naipi viewpoint and two other paths were closed while the main trail stayed open.
High water makes the most powerful pictures and the wettest sessions; low water shows more rock and separate falls. If the walkway is closed on your date, the session moves to the trail viewpoints, which still frame the whole front of the falls.
What ICMBio allows a camera to do
ICMBio's image page for the park, updated in August 2026, says filming and photography are free in areas and at hours open to visitors, as long as they do not change the visitor routine. A session outside visiting hours, in a closed area, or one that blocks a viewpoint or gathers a crowd needs a special authorisation, requested through the federal image-capture service, which ICMBio answers within 10 calendar days per stage. Events with a cast or a set in the Polo Cataratas go through Urbia Cataratas, and ICMBio gives itself up to 100 calendar days for them.
Neither page mentions tripods. A tripod on a crowded walkway is the kind of set-up that changes the visitor routine, so we shoot handheld on the walkway and keep a tripod for the wider viewpoints when they are empty.
Drones at the falls
Drones are where the Brazilian park is strictest. ICMBio's page says visitors may not use drones for images at all, even when the drone is registered with ANAC and the flight follows DECEA's rules. A professional flight needs the park chief's prior approval, may only happen where and when there are no visitors, and also needs a SARPAS authorisation under DECEA's ICA 100-40, in force since 1 July 2026. Foz do Iguaçu's international airport and the heliports for the scenic flights sit close to the park, so the pilot plans the airspace as well. Our page on drone photo and video in Foz do Iguaçu explains the options outside the park, and the drone guide covers the federal rules.
