Proposal photography

Proposal photography is a 30-minute service, priced from $200, in which a photographer hides in plain sight, captures the moment one partner asks the other to marry, and then photographs the newly engaged couple. It is a different purchase from a couple session because the person being proposed to must not know it is happening, so the photographer, the spot, the timing and the cue are all arranged in advance with only one of you, usually by message from abroad.

The plan starts with a main spot and a covered fallback. In Brazil the usual choices are a sunset viewpoint in Rio de Janeiro, a dune at Jericoacoara as the sun drops into the sea, a deck over the water in Fernando de Noronha, or a quiet lane in Paraty after the day-trippers leave. Every one of them can be crowded, windy or rained out on the day. The photographer arrives about 15 minutes before you, takes a position that reads as another visitor with a camera, and waits for a signal you choose, so the frames start when you are ready rather than at a minute somebody guessed.

Venues matter more than people expect. The summits of Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado are run by operators with their own rules for professional cameras, and a restaurant, pousada or schooner skipper decides whether an outside photographer may work on board or on the premises. We tell you what to ask and when, and confirm nothing until the answer is in writing. If a thunderstorm makes the location unusable, the proposal moves to another date at no charge; in Rio de Janeiro the summer storms usually build in the late afternoon and pass within an hour, which is why an early slot leaves room to wait one out.

After the yes comes a short portrait session, while it is still happening to you, which is where many of the 20 edited photos come from. The gallery is delivered within 5 days, because people want to share the news while it is still news. Proposal photography covers stills only; a filmed proposal is a separate service with its own operator, and an engagement session for save-the-dates is a different booking, usually made months later.

Questions about proposal photography

How does the photographer stay hidden during a proposal shoot?

During a proposal shoot in Brazil the photographer is in position 15 minutes before you arrive, dressed like any other visitor and working with a long lens from a spot agreed by message. Proposal photography starts on a signal you choose, so a late taxi or a slow walk up the hill does not ruin the timing.

Can a proposal be photographed at Sugarloaf Mountain or Christ the Redeemer?

A proposal at Sugarloaf Mountain or Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro is possible, but both summits are run by operators who set their own rules for professional cameras and both are crowded at sunset. Proposal photography there is confirmed only after we check the current rule with the operator for your date.

What happens to proposal photography if it rains in Brazil?

Proposal photography in Brazil is planned with a covered fallback, and light rain is usually workable. If a thunderstorm makes the location unusable, the proposal moves to a new date at no charge; in Rio de Janeiro the summer storms often arrive in the late afternoon and pass within an hour.

Is video included with proposal photography?

Proposal photography covers stills only: 20 edited photos from a 30-minute booking. A filmed proposal is a separate service, proposal video, because one person cannot shoot both well from a hidden position; the two can be booked for the same moment with two people on site.
