Photographers in Búzios

Búzios, officially Armação dos Búzios, is a resort town on a peninsula in the Região dos Lagos of Rio de Janeiro state, about 170 km east of the city of Rio by road. The Prefeitura's tourism portal counts 23 beaches around its edge, and they split into two kinds. The northern side faces the bay and the mainland, with small, calm coves, fishing boats and the old village of Armação; the southern and eastern side faces the open Atlantic, with long beaches, colder water, waves and wind.

That split decides the light. Armação, the Orla Bardot and Praia dos Ossos look west and north-west across the bay, so sunset falls over the water, at about 17:11 on 21 June and 18:31 on 21 December. Geribá and Ferradura open to the south, and get side light at both ends of the day rather than a sun on the horizon. Sunrise comes up out of the ocean behind the eastern beaches, from about 4:59 in December to 6:27 in June.

The beaches are public, and the municipal code sets the rules that matter to a session. Amplified sound and animals are not allowed on the sand, and ball games are limited to marked zones on a handful of beaches such as Geribá, Manguinhos and Armação. Several of the northern coves are easiest to reach by boat, and boat tours leave daily from the town piers. Hotels and pousadas line Ferradura and Geribá, and each one sets its own rules for outside photographers, so a session on a hotel terrace or at a beach club starts with a written answer from the venue.

People who book here are couples above all: elopements and small weddings at the pousadas, honeymoons of a few nights after a wedding in Rio or São Paulo, proposals on the Orla at dusk, and families on summer holiday. The town is small enough that the photographer can cover two beaches and the Rua das Pedras in the same evening.

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Orla Bardot

The waterfront promenade of Armação, named after Brigitte Bardot, who made Búzios famous in the 1960s, with her bronze statue on the sea wall and fishing boats moored in front. It faces west across the bay, and in the last hour of light the boats, the water and the hills of the mainland turn gold.

    Best time
Sunset, with the light going down over the bay
    Permit
Free for a handheld session: the waterfront is public ground listed among the town's sights by the Prefeitura

  • Praia da Ferradura

A horseshoe-shaped cove about 1.5 km long, sheltered from wind and currents, with fine pale sand and calm blue water. Hotels and large houses line it, and cars reach almost to the sand, which makes it the easy beach for families and for sessions with a change of outfit.

    Best time
Morning, when the water is flat and the cove is quiet
    Permit
Free for a handheld session on the public beach; hotels behind the sand set their own rules for outside photographers

  • Praia de Geribá

Almost 2 km of wide, fine white sand facing the open sea, with cold, rough water and the town's main surf break. The rocks of Ponta do Marisco close the right-hand end. Beach bars and restaurants make it the liveliest beach in Búzios, so sessions here are early or late.

    Best time
Late afternoon, with side light and surfers in the water
    Permit
Free for a handheld session; ball games only in the marked zone on the left side of the beach

  • Praia dos Ossos

A 400 m cove at the tip of the peninsula, full of small painted fishing boats, with trees along the shore and restored fishermen's houses behind. It is reached by road to the start of Rua da Praia dos Ossos or by boat, and it is the most postcard-like corner of the town.

    Best time
Golden hour, when the small boats are back in the cove
    Permit
Free for a handheld session on the public beach

Timing

When to photograph in Búzios

The Prefeitura describes Búzios as sunny for most of the year. Summer, from December to March, is the high season, with the warmest sea, the longest days and the busiest beaches and streets, and the Prefeitura publishes a cruise-ship calendar for the bay, because ship days fill Armação and the Rua das Pedras with day visitors. The months from May to September are cooler and quieter, with lower sun and earlier sunsets over the bay, and suit couples who want empty beaches. The peninsula is windy, and the wind direction on the day often decides between the sheltered coves and the open beaches.

Questions about photography in Búzios

Can we bring our dog to a beach photo session in Búzios?

No. The municipal code of Armação dos Búzios does not allow animals to enter or stay on the beaches, even with their owners, so a family session in Búzios with a dog is planned on the Orla Bardot, a pousada garden or a lookout rather than on the sand.

Which Búzios beach is best for a photo session in calm water?

Praia da Ferradura, in most weather. The Prefeitura of Búzios describes it as a 1.5 km horseshoe cove sheltered from wind and sea currents, with calm water, which suits families, couples in the water and anyone who wants flat sea behind them. Geribá, on the open side, has waves and wind.

Where is the best sunset in Búzios for photos?

On the bay side of Búzios, where the beaches face west: the Orla Bardot in Armação and the coves around Ossos and Manguinhos. The sun sets over the water there, at about 17:11 in June and 18:31 in December, while the southern beaches such as Geribá and Ferradura get side light instead.
