Fernando de Noronha is an Atlantic archipelago about 350 km off the coast, governed by the state of Pernambuco and split between two federal conservation units: the Parque Nacional Marinho de Fernando de Noronha, which covers most of the coast and sea, and the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) around the village and the airport. Both are run by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), and which of the two a session falls in decides almost everything about it.

Two charges apply before a camera comes out. The Administração do Distrito Estadual de Fernando de Noronha collects the Taxa de Preservação Ambiental (TPA) from every non-resident, priced by the length of the stay: R$ 105,79 for one day and R$ 672,85 for seven in 2026, with unplanned extra days charged at double. The park ticket is separate, set by ICMBio Portaria nº 4.423 at R$ 384 with a 50% discount for Brazilians, and it is checked at each control post, called a PIC, at the park beaches.

The park also sets the hours. Baía do Sancho opens from 8:00 to 18:00 and is reached by a fixed ladder in the cliff with alternating up and down windows; the Baía dos Golfinhos lookout opens at 6:30; the Baía do Sueste admits visitors to the sand from 9:00 to 16:00 and bans bathing. The natural pools of Atalaia are booked by daily slot, timed by ICMBio to the low tide and capped by a carrying-capacity study.

Clients here are mostly honeymooners and couples on stays of four to seven nights, with a share of proposals and small elopements. ICMBio does not require authorisation for personal photo sessions, engagement shoots included, as long as they stay in visiting areas, in opening hours, and do not disrupt other visitors. Drones are another matter: the park reserves them for scientific research, so aerial work happens over the APA only.

  • Baía do Sancho

    A cove of turquoise water under high cliffs, reached by a fixed ladder down a crack in the rock. ICMBio opens it from 8:00 to 18:00 and runs the ladder on a timetable of alternating descent and ascent windows, so the time down on the sand is planned around it.

  • Mirante da Baía dos Golfinhos

    A cliff-top lookout over the bay where spinner dolphins rest, mostly early in the morning. It shares a control post with Sancho and opens earlier, from 6:30 to 18:30, which makes it the first park light of the day.

  • Praia do Leão and Mirante da Ponta das Caracas

    An isolated beach on the outer sea with strong currents, the main green-turtle nesting site of the archipelago, and the rocky viewpoint of Ponta das Caracas next to it. Both are open from 8:00 to 18:00, and the reef benches exposed at low tide are protected.

  • Piscina natural do Atalaia

    A coral-floored tide pool about 30 minutes on foot from the gate, opened only at low tide and only to a capped number of visitors per day. Standing, kneeling or touching the bottom is forbidden, so every picture here is taken floating.

  • Village beaches of the APA (Conceição, Boldró, Cachorro)

    The inner-sea beaches below the village and the Morro do Pico, inside the Área de Proteção Ambiental rather than the park. They have no gate and no closing time, which makes them the island’s sunset stage and the only place a drone can go up.

Timing

When to photograph in Fernando de Noronha

ICMBio describes March to July as the rainy season on the island, when trails turn muddy and visitors are asked to arrive 30 minutes early for booked slots. August to February is drier and brings the clearest water to the pools. On the Praia do Leão green turtles nest from December to May, and the reef shelves there are off limits to walking in every month. Sunset falls between about 18:03 and 18:27 local time across the year, and most park beaches close at 18:00.
