Photographers in São Paulo

São Paulo is a city of concrete, murals and private gardens where a photo session is planned around who runs the ground underfoot. The Secretaria Municipal do Verde e do Meio Ambiente (SVMA) allows personal photographs in the municipal parks, but treats a session with large cameras, tripods or added lighting as commercial photography and asks for its prior authorisation, requested 10 days ahead. Several of the best-known parks are no longer run by SVMA at all: Parque Ibirapuera is operated by the concessionaire Urbia, and Parque Trianon on Avenida Paulista by the Consórcio Borboletas, and in those parks the request goes to the concessionaire instead.

Moving pictures follow a different track. Under Decreto 56.905/2016, every filming request for a municipal public space, except personal or journalistic recording, is centralised at the São Paulo Film Commission, the film office of the city agency Spcine. A photographer with a camera on a pavement is not a film shoot; a videographer with a crew, a gimbal rig and a car parked for equipment can be.

The streets carry the rest of the work. Avenida Paulista is closed to cars on Sundays and holidays from 9:00 to 16:00 under the Ruas Abertas programme, between Praça do Ciclista and Praça Oswaldo Cruz, with the red pillars and the open span of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) at number 1578. Beco do Batman in Vila Madalena is a public alley of murals that are painted over and replaced continuously, so the wall in an old photograph may not exist any more.

Clients here are mostly people who live or work in the city: founders and executives who need portraits, teams at conferences, couples between two jobs, and families marking a birthday. Sessions are short and close to the client, and traffic, not light, is usually the constraint that shapes the day.

Locations

Popular photography locations in São Paulo

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Parque Ibirapuera

The city's central park, with its lake, the Oscar Niemeyer marquee and long tree-lined paths. SVMA lists Ibirapuera among the parks run by Urbia, and states that commercial photographs in concession parks are arranged with the concessionaire. Bird photography follows a separate permanent authorisation form.

    Best time
Weekday mornings, before the running groups and school visits
    Permit
Free for personal photographs; a session with professional equipment in Ibirapuera is authorised by the concessionaire Urbia, not by SVMA, so the request goes to Urbia before booking

  • Avenida Paulista and the MASP open span

Under the Ruas Abertas programme the avenue is open to pedestrians on Sundays and holidays from 9:00 to 16:00, from Praça do Ciclista to Praça Oswaldo Cruz. The open span under MASP, at Avenida Paulista 1578, is public ground and fills with fairs and street music on those days.

    Best time
Sunday between 9:00 and 16:00, when the avenue is closed to cars
    Permit
Free on public pavement; filming with a crew in a municipal public space goes through the São Paulo Film Commission at Spcine

  • Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP)

The museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, closes on Mondays, and stays open until 20:00 on Tuesdays and 21:00 on Fridays. Online booking is required even on the free days. The red building lifted on four pillars is the frame most portraits on Paulista are built around.

    Best time
Tuesday, when entry is free, or a weekday morning at the 10:00 opening
    Permit
Museum ticket booked online, free on Tuesdays and on Fridays from 18:00; the museum does not publish a rule for professional photography inside, so ask MASP before planning interior portraits

  • Beco do Batman

A street-art alley in Vila Madalena named after a Batman graffiti painted in the 1980s, which no longer exists. The municipal tourism office notes the artisan fairs, galleries and bars that draw crowds at weekends, and the nearby Patápio staircase.

    Best time
Weekday mornings, before the weekend fairs and crowds
    Permit
Public alley with free access; residents live along it, so sessions keep doorways and garages clear

  • Parque Trianon

A small remnant of Atlantic Forest facing MASP across Avenida Paulista, with shaded paths and sculpture. It gives the avenue's portraits a green background two minutes on foot from the concrete.

    Best time
Late morning, when the canopy softens the light
    Permit
Free for personal photographs; professional equipment in Trianon is arranged with the concessionaire Consórcio Borboletas, which SVMA names as the park's operator

Timing

When to photograph in São Paulo

Summer, roughly December to March, is the wet season, and afternoon thunderstorms are common, so outdoor sessions go early in the morning. Winter, June to August, is drier, with clear and cold mornings and the shortest days: the sun sets around 17:30 in late June and close to 19:00 in January. Brazil keeps no daylight saving time, so those times hold without a clock change. Sundays bring car-free Avenida Paulista; weekday mornings bring the emptiest alleys in Vila Madalena.

Questions about photography in São Paulo

Do I need a permit for a photo session in a São Paulo park?

For a personal photograph, no. In the municipal parks run by SVMA, a session with large cameras, tripods or added lighting counts as commercial photography and needs SVMA authorisation requested 10 days ahead. In concession parks such as Parque Ibirapuera, run by Urbia, the request goes to the concessionaire instead.

When is Avenida Paulista closed to cars?

On Sundays and holidays from 9:00 to 16:00, under the São Paulo Ruas Abertas programme, between Praça do Ciclista and Praça Oswaldo Cruz. A photo session on Avenida Paulista on a Sunday morning gets the avenue without traffic, with the open span of MASP at number 1578 in the middle of the stretch.

Does filming a video in a São Paulo street need authorisation?

Filming in a municipal public space in São Paulo, other than personal or journalistic recording, is requested through the São Paulo Film Commission at Spcine under Decreto 56.905/2016. A small photo session on a pavement is not a film shoot, but a video crew with equipment in the street should file the request.

What time is sunset in São Paulo?

São Paulo has sunset at around 17:30 in late June and close to 19:00 in January, and Brazil has kept no daylight saving time since 2019. Golden-hour sessions in São Paulo are therefore booked from about 16:30 in winter and 18:00 in summer, with traffic between neighbourhoods added to the plan.
