Photographers in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is a coastal city wrapped around a forest: the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, a national park run by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), holds Corcovado, Pedra Bonita, Pedra da Gávea, the Floresta da Tijuca and Parque Lage inside the city limits. Almost every famous view in Rio sits in one of three places: that federal park, private ground such as the Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar, or a public beach run by the Prefeitura do Rio. Each one keeps its own hours and its own position on cameras, and a session is planned around which of the three it falls under.

The park's visitor protocol, PROV nº 01/2024, sets the clock. The Trem do Corcovado and the concession vans run from 8:00 to 19:00, extended to 20:00 in summer; Parque Lage admits visitors from 8:00 to 18:00; the Pedra Bonita vehicle gate opens from 8:00 to 17:00. ICMBio does not require an authorisation for filming inside a federal park during public hours when the visitor routine is left as it is. A shoot before opening, after closing or one that blocks a viewpoint needs ICMBio's special image-capture authorisation, which is free and requested online with a gov.br account.

Light decides the rest. Rio keeps a single time zone all year, and on 21 December the sun rises at about 5:04 and sets at 18:37, while on 21 June it rises at 6:32 and sets at 17:16. Sunrise comes up out of the Atlantic behind Copacabana and Ipanema, and sunset drops behind the mountains of the Zona Oeste, which is why Pedra do Arpoador fills with people clapping the sun down on clear evenings in the cooler months.

The people booking here are mostly couples and families from the US, Canada and Europe, plus Brazilian couples from other states: proposals at first light, engagement sessions in the forest, honeymoon portraits with Sugarloaf behind them, and Carnaval portraits in February. The beaches are public ground, but hotels, the Bondinho and the Santuário Cristo Redentor are private or religious ground with rules of their own, and those rules are confirmed in writing before a session is booked there.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Rio de Janeiro

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Cristo Redentor (Corcovado)

The statue on the 700 m summit of Corcovado, inside the Parque Nacional da Tijuca and run as a sanctuary of the Archdiocese of Rio. A priest blesses the day between 7:30 and 8:00 and the plateau opens after that, so the statue is a daytime location. The crowd builds through the morning, and the first hour after opening is the one with space to work.

    Best time
The first train at 8:00, before the plateau fills
    Permit
Train or van ticket required; handheld photography during visiting hours needs no permit, drones are banned during visiting hours, and commercial use of the statue's image is authorised by the Santuário

  • Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar

Two granite peaks over Urca linked by cable car, privately run as the Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar. The park stays open into the evening, and its site asks visitors to check the hours on the day of the visit because they change. The summit looks west to Corcovado and over Botafogo bay at sunset.

    Best time
Late afternoon into dusk, with the city lighting up behind
    Permit
Cable-car ticket required; the park publishes no rule on professional photo sessions, so ask the park before booking a shoot with a tripod or crew

  • Pedra do Arpoador

The rock between Ipanema and Copacabana, looking west along Ipanema and Leblon to the Morro Dois Irmãos. At sunrise it is quiet and faces the open Atlantic; on clear winter evenings hundreds of people gather there to watch the sun go down behind the hills.

    Best time
Sunrise for an empty rock; sunset in the cooler months for the crowd and the colour
    Permit
Public ground: a handheld session needs no permit; a video production occupying public space is authorised through the Rio Film Commission at least 7 working days ahead

  • Pedra Bonita (Parque Nacional da Tijuca)

A granite dome above São Conrado, with the hang-gliding ramp, the beach and Pedra da Gávea in one frame. The trail is short but steep, and the ramp is shared with gliders operating under an agreement with the Confederação Brasileira de Voo Livre, so the session works around take-offs.

    Best time
Mid-afternoon climb for late light over São Conrado
    Permit
No entry fee in the park protocol; the vehicle gate opens 8:00–17:00 (to 18:00 in summer), and a shoot outside those hours needs ICMBio's special authorisation

  • Parque Lage

A 1920s mansion with an inner courtyard and pool at the foot of Corcovado, inside the national park and now home to an art school. The gardens and forest paths give shade at midday, and the trail to Corcovado starts here.

    Best time
Morning, when the courtyard pool is in soft light
    Permit
Free entry during the 8:00–18:00 opening; using the park's image to promote a brand or a service needs ICMBio's commercial-use authorisation, paid by GRU

Timing

When to photograph in Rio de Janeiro

Summer in Rio runs from December to March and brings the heat and most of the rain, usually as short afternoon storms that clear before sunset. May to August is cooler and drier, with clearer air for the long views from Corcovado and the cable car, and with the sun setting into the sea off Arpoador. Carnaval moves with Easter and falls in early February in 2027, when the Zona Sul streets close for blocos and hotels fill weeks ahead. New Year's Eve on Copacabana draws one of the largest crowds of the year, and sessions on that beach between Christmas and 1 January are planned around stage set-up and closures.

Questions about photography in Rio de Janeiro

Do I need a permit for a photo session at Christ the Redeemer?

Not for a personal session. ICMBio rules for the Parque Nacional da Tijuca let people film during public hours without authorisation when the visitor routine is unchanged, so a couple session at the Cristo Redentor with a handheld camera needs no permit. Drones are banned there during visiting hours, and commercial use of the statue's image goes through the Santuário.

What time does Christ the Redeemer open for photos?

The Trem do Corcovado and the concession vans to the Cristo Redentor run from 8:00 to 19:00, extended to 20:00 in summer, and the Santuário opens the plateau only after a blessing given between 7:30 and 8:00. A sunrise session at the statue is therefore not possible without special permission, and Rio sunrise sessions happen on the beach.

Do photographers need a permit on Rio de Janeiro beaches?

A handheld photo session on a public beach in Rio de Janeiro needs no permit. Audiovisual productions in public spaces are authorised by the Rio Film Commission of the Prefeitura do Rio under Decree nº 49.283/2021, with requests filed at least 7 working days ahead, which matters for a video crew with lights, a set or a closed area.

What is the best month for a photo session in Rio de Janeiro?

May to August gives Rio de Janeiro its driest and clearest weeks, with sunset around 17:15 to 17:30 and the sun going down into the sea off Arpoador. December to March is hotter and wetter, with afternoon storms, and sunrise before 5:30 rewards an early start on the beach before the heat.
