Weddings & elopements
Destination wedding photography
Destination wedding photography in Brazil is full-day coverage of a wedding with guests and a party, priced from $1,800 for 8 hours and 500 edited photographs delivered within 6 weeks. Most of the couples who book it fly in with their guests and marry at a pousada in Trancoso or Búzios, a beach club in Florianópolis, a coffee fazenda in the hills of the Southeast or a venue in Rio de Janeiro. The figure is a starting quote rather than a fixed package, because a second venue, a welcome party or a flight to an island changes the day.

How much a wedding photographer costs in Brazil, line by line
Wedding photography in Brazil starts at $1,800 for an 8-hour day booked here. Film, drone, hours, travel and the venue’s own vendor rules are what turn that figure into a final quote.

The first decision is legal, not photographic. A civil marriage in Brazil is made at a Cartório de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais after a habilitação filed in person: birth certificates, a declaration of marital status and residence, two adult witnesses, and proof of any divorce. Brazil joined the Hague Apostille Convention through Decreto 8.660 of 2016, so foreign certificates need an apostille, and under Lei 6.015/1973 a document in another language takes legal effect only once it is translated into Portuguese and the translation is registered. Once the file is complete, the registry publishes it electronically and issues the certificate within up to 5 days; the certificate is valid for 90 days. The same statute points the application to the registry where one of the couple lives, so a couple who both live abroad should ask the cartório before planning around it. Many do the legal part at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Brazil, which needs no paperwork at all.
When the legal ceremony is part of the day, it does not have to happen at a counter. Article 1.534 of the Código Civil sets the civil wedding at the cartório with at least two witnesses, but allows another public or private building when the couple asks and the celebrant agrees, which is how a judge of the peace ends up officiating on a pousada lawn. Agree that travel with the registry early. Since Resolução 175 of 2013 by the Conselho Nacional de Justiça, no registry in Brazil may refuse a same-sex couple.
The venue writes the rest of the rules. Each pousada, resort and beach club sets its own terms for an outside photographer: an outside-vendor fee, liability insurance, registration a set number of days ahead, or a list of in-house suppliers only. Ask for those terms in writing before you sign. Light shapes the timeline too: a beach ceremony that ends about an hour before sunset leaves soft light for family groups and portraits, and every outdoor part of the day gets a covered fallback in the contract. If the plan is the two of you and a celebrant with no party, the elopement page fits better; if you are already married, read the vow renewal page.
Questions about destination wedding photography
Can a foreign couple legally marry in Brazil?
A foreign couple can marry legally in Brazil through a civil marriage at a Cartório de Registro Civil das Pessoas Naturais, after a habilitação filed in person with birth certificates, a declaration of marital status and two witnesses. Foreign documents need a Hague apostille and a Portuguese translation registered in Brazil, so many destination couples marry at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Brazil instead.
How long does the cartório paperwork for a wedding in Brazil take?
Under Lei 6.015/1973 as amended in 2022, the Brazilian Registro Civil publishes the habilitação electronically and issues the certificate within up to 5 days once the documents are in order, and the Código Civil makes that certificate valid for 90 days. A wedding in Brazil should therefore be scheduled inside that 90-day window, with time added for apostilles and translations.
Can a resort or pousada in Brazil refuse an outside wedding photographer?
Each Brazilian resort, pousada and beach club sets its own terms for an outside wedding photographer: some charge an outside-vendor fee, some require liability insurance or advance registration, and some only allow their in-house team. Ask the venue for those conditions in writing before you sign, because they can change the total cost of wedding photography in Brazil.
Can the civil wedding happen at our venue rather than at the cartório?
The Brazilian Código Civil (art. 1.534) holds a civil wedding at the cartório with at least two witnesses, but lets it take place in another public or private building when the couple asks and the celebrant agrees. A wedding at a pousada or fazenda in Brazil can therefore be the legal ceremony, if the registry accepts and its travel costs are settled in advance.
Why is wedding photography in Brazil quoted rather than fixed?
Wedding photography in Brazil starts as a fixed 8-hour day with 500 edited photographs, and the written quote then adjusts for what changes the cost: a second venue, a welcome party or a day-after session, hours beyond eight, and travel to places such as Fernando de Noronha or Trancoso that need a flight or a long transfer. Nothing is added on the day itself.
