A Carnival photoshoot in Rio and Salvador: 2027 dates, timing and safety

A Carnival photoshoot in Brazil is a costume session timed around the blocos, from $200. Rio’s street carnival starts 16 January 2027; the Sambódromo parades run 7–9 February.

A Carnival photoshoot — an *ensaio de carnaval* — is a 30-minute photo session in costume, glitter and colour, timed around the street parades, priced from $200 for 20 edited photos delivered within 7 days. It is not a photographer following a bloco for hours in a crowd of thousands: it is a planned half-hour before or beside the party, in a place where the camera can work. This guide covers the 2027 dates in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, when to shoot, what to wear and how to stay safe with a camera in Carnival crowds.

The 2027 dates

Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027 and Ash Wednesday on 10 February, but in both cities the parties start weeks earlier.

Salvador's city hall had not posted the official opening day of its 2027 Carnaval circuits on its own site when this guide was written, so check it before you book flights around a particular night.

Rio de Janeiro: blocos and the Sambódromo

Every Rio bloco parades with a permit: Riotur registers each one online, and its organisers then need documents from the Polícia Militar, the Polícia Civil and the Corpo de Bombeiros. More than 400 parades were authorised in 2026, which is why the city publishes an official schedule and why the same street can go from empty to packed in 20 minutes.

For a session, that schedule is the most useful document you have. The best photographs come from the hour before a bloco gathers — costumes fresh, light still low, the street filling up behind you — or from a side street a block away while it passes. A session in the middle of a large bloco gives crowded frames and no control.

At the Sambódromo, LIESA, the league that runs the Grupo Especial, bans polystyrene coolers, glass bottles, bags, weapons, sharp objects, flares and fireworks, and lets each spectator bring two food items and two 500 ml plastic bottles. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. LIESA publishes no rule on cameras or lenses for spectators, and a photographer's ticket is still a ticket, so a session inside the Sambódromo is the couple's own evening with a photographer beside them, not access to the parade track.

Salvador: trios elétricos and the Pelourinho

Salvador's Carnival is built around the trios elétricos, the sound trucks that move along three circuits: Dodô from Barra to Ondina along the sea, Osmar through Campo Grande in the centre, and Batatinha in the Pelourinho, the historic centre listed by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). The Pelourinho's coloured façades and the smaller, slower Batatinha circuit make it the place for a costume session, best in the morning before the afternoon heat and the crowds. The Furdunço and Fuzuê on 30 and 31 January 2027 are pre-Carnaval parades of their own, and a good weekend for a session with fewer people than Carnival itself.

Costumes, glitter and what to bring

A fantasia photographs best with one strong idea and one colour that stands out from the street: gold, red, sequins, feathers or a theme the whole group shares. Use biodegradable glitter, and put it on after the makeup is set, not before. Shoes matter more than they seem: cobbles in Santa Teresa and the Pelourinho, and hours on asphalt, are hard on sandals. Bring water; February in both cities is hot and humid.

Safety in the crowd

Phones are the most common thing stolen at Carnival in any Brazilian city. Leave passports, cards you do not need and good jewellery at the hotel; carry one card, a little cash and a phone in a front pocket or a pouch under the costume. The photographer carries a small camera and one lens, not a bag of kit, and picks the edge of a bloco rather than its middle. Agree a meeting point in advance, because phone networks are often saturated in big blocos.

Booking a Carnival session

A Carnival photoshoot runs 30 minutes with 20 edited photos within 7 days, from $200; a bachelorette session in costume is also from $200; and social content from $400 adds short vertical clips for a group that wants to post the same day. Read the Carnival session pages for Rio and Salvador, the Rio de Janeiro and Salvador city pages, the Rio photo locations guide for quieter spots, and book early: Carnival weeks fill first.

Frequently asked questions

When is Carnival 2027 in Rio de Janeiro?
Carnival 2027 in Rio de Janeiro peaks with the Grupo Especial samba-school parades at the Sambódromo on 7, 8 and 9 February 2027, before Ash Wednesday on 10 February. Riotur expects the street carnival of blocos to start earlier, on 16 January 2027.
Is it safe to bring a camera to a Carnival bloco in Brazil?
A camera at a Carnival bloco in Rio de Janeiro or Salvador is safest small and close to the body, with the photographer working from the edge of the crowd rather than its middle. Phones are the most commonly stolen item, so carry one card, a little cash and leave passports at the hotel.
What is the best time for a Carnival photoshoot in Rio or Salvador?
The best time for a Carnival photoshoot in Rio de Janeiro or Salvador is the hour before a bloco gathers, as listed in the city’s official schedule, when costumes are fresh and the light is low. Salvador’s pre-Carnival Furdunço and Fuzuê on 30 and 31 January 2027 also give costumes with fewer people.
Can a photographer go into the Sambódromo during the Rio Carnival parades?
A photographer at the Rio Sambódromo needs a spectator ticket like anyone else, and LIESA bans bags, glass bottles, polystyrene coolers, sharp objects, flares and fireworks. A Carnival photoshoot there is the couple’s own evening in the stands with the photographer beside them, not access to the parade track.
