There is no road traffic. The Barcas S/A ferries and the faster private boats cross daily from Angra dos Reis, Conceição de Jacareí and Mangaratiba to Vila do Abraão, the main village on the north-east coast, where the park headquarters stands. From Abraão, every other beach is a walk on a forest trail or a ride on a boat taxi or tour, and the state decree on park use, nº 42.483/2010, bans motor vehicles from unauthorised places inside the park. Photographer, couple and luggage all travel the same way, which makes the island one of the few places where the transfer is part of the photographs.
Light on the island follows the mountains. On 21 December the sun rises at about 5:08 and sets at 18:41, and on 21 June it rises at 6:37 and sets at 17:19, but the high ridge behind Abraão, crowned by the Pico do Papagaio, puts the village into shadow well before sunset. Beaches facing open water get the last light; coves under the ridge get soft, even shade for portraits by mid-afternoon.
People who book here are couples on a slow trip: elopements on a beach with nobody else on it, honeymoon portraits in clear water, proposals at the end of a trail. Families come on summer holidays, and many guests are travellers combining Rio, Paraty and the island in one route. Pousadas on the island set their own rules for outside photographers, and those are confirmed in writing before booking.
