Elopement photography

Elopement photography in Brazil is three hours of coverage for a ceremony with no party, priced from $950 for 150 edited photographs delivered within 3 weeks. The couple, a celebrant and a handful of witnesses at most: the vows, portraits straight afterwards, and one move to a second place with different light. Without a dinner, toasts or a dance floor, the day does not need eight hours, and the price follows from that.

Eloping in Brazil, and where a ceremony may happen

An elopement leans on the place more than on the timeline, so the first question is who controls it. Brazilian beaches are public: Lei 7.661 of 1988 declares them for common use and guarantees free access to the sand and the sea, so no hotel can sell a stretch of shore. That openness cuts both ways. Anyone may walk through the frame, and a setup with an arch, chairs or a speaker can need authorisation from the city hall even on a quiet beach. A pousada with its own garden or deck above the sand avoids both problems. A waterfall inside a national park answers to the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) or its concessionaire, and the colonial streets of Paraty or Ouro Preto fill up with day visitors by mid-morning.

Most destination elopements in Brazil are symbolic, led by a celebrant, with the legal marriage done before or after the trip. A legal civil marriage is possible but runs on its own track: a habilitação filed in person at the Registro Civil, foreign certificates with a Hague apostille and a registered Portuguese translation, two witnesses, and a certificate valid for 90 days. Same-sex couples have the same access to it under Resolução 175 of 2013 by the Conselho Nacional de Justiça. Either way, the photographs are the same three hours.

Sunrise and the last two hours before sunset are the windows that work. A three-hour elopement usually starts about two and a half hours before sunset, so the ceremony takes the warmer light and the portraits finish as the sun goes down. If the guest list grows past a few people or a dinner is added, the full wedding coverage is the better fit; if the two of you are already married, look at the vow renewal page.

Questions about elopement photography

What separates an elopement from a small wedding in Brazil?

An elopement in Brazil is a ceremony and portraits with no reception: the two of you, a celebrant and a handful of witnesses at most, photographed over 3 hours. Once a dinner, toasts or a dance floor are added, it is a small wedding, and the 8-hour wedding coverage fits better because the party is where most of the hours go.

Can we elope on a public beach in Brazil?

Brazilian beaches are public under Lei 7.661/1988, which guarantees free access to the sand and the sea, so no hotel can sell exclusive use of the shore. An elopement with an arch, chairs or a sound system on the sand can still need authorisation from the city hall, so ask the prefeitura or your pousada before planning an elopement setup on a beach in Brazil.

Is an elopement in Brazil a legal marriage?

Most elopements in Brazil are symbolic ceremonies led by a celebrant, with the legal marriage done at home before or after the trip. A legal civil marriage in Brazil needs a habilitação at the Registro Civil, apostilled documents with registered Portuguese translations and two witnesses, so it is planned as a separate step from the elopement photography.

Can a same-sex couple elope or marry in Brazil?

A same-sex couple can elope in Brazil exactly as any other couple, and can also marry legally: Resolução 175 of 2013 by the Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ) forbids any Brazilian registry from refusing the habilitação or the civil marriage of two people of the same sex. Elopement photography is the same 3 hours either way.
