Trash the dress session
A trash the dress session in Brazil is a two-hour portrait session in your wedding dress and suit, photographed on a day after the wedding, priced from $450 for 60 edited photographs delivered within 10 days. There is no ceremony, no guest list and no timeline to protect. The session exists to take the dress where a wedding day cannot go: the surf of the Atlantic, a river with a sandy bed, the pool below a waterfall, or the white dunes of the Northeast. Brazilian photographers use the English name too, and in Brazil it names exactly this.

Water is the reason people book trash the dress, and also the risk. A wet gown turns heavy and wraps around the legs, so a session in the sea stays in water no deeper than the waist, away from rip currents, and moves to a calm cove, a lagoon or dry sand when the lifeguard flags or the swell say so. The plan always photographs the dress dry first and soaked last. Rivers and waterfall pools have currents and slippery rock of their own, and the photographer walks the footing before the couple steps in.
Many of the most photographed waterfalls and dunes in Brazil sit inside protected areas or on private land, and each has its own rules. A national park managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), or by the concessionaire that runs its visitor services, may require authorisation for professional photography; a private waterfall charges its own entry and sets its own hours. Ask the manager before choosing the place, and expect some to refuse a session altogether. The city pages carry the specific rules where an authority publishes them.
Salt water, sand, red mud and river minerals can stain lace and loosen beading. Rinse the dress in fresh water on the day of the session, and ask a dry cleaner about the fabric beforehand if you plan to keep it. A trash the dress session is not a second wedding and not a vow renewal: nobody says vows, and nobody else needs to attend. Couples often book it for the morning after a pousada wedding, or on a later trip to a beach they could not photograph on the day.
Questions about trash the dress session
What happens during a trash the dress session?
A trash the dress session is a 2-hour portrait session in your wedding dress and suit, photographed on a day after the wedding, often in the sea, a river, a waterfall pool or the dunes of the Brazilian Northeast. Nobody sets out to ruin the dress: the aim is to wear it where a wedding day cannot go, with no guests and no timeline.
Is it safe to wear a wedding dress in the sea in Brazil?
A wet wedding dress turns heavy and wraps around the legs, so a trash the dress session in the Brazilian surf stays in water no deeper than the waist, away from rip currents and never in rough sea. The photographer checks the lifeguard flags and the swell on the day, and moves the session to a calm cove, a lagoon or dry sand when needed.
Can a trash the dress session be held at a waterfall or in a national park?
A trash the dress session at a waterfall in Brazil depends on who manages it: a national park run by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) or its concessionaire may require authorisation for professional photography, and a private waterfall sets its own rules and entry fee. Ask the manager before choosing the place.
Will salt water and sand ruin the dress?
Salt water, sand, red mud and river minerals can stain lace and loosen beading, so a trash the dress session suits a dress you are content to wear hard. Rinse the dress in fresh water on the day of the session, and ask a dry cleaner about the fabric beforehand if you intend to keep it after the shoot.
