Fernando de Noronha photography guide: the TPA, the park ticket, Sancho, drones and light

A Fernando de Noronha photo session is a 30-minute shoot on a volcanic archipelago 350 km off the coast of Pernambuco, priced from $150 for a couple, where most of the famous views sit inside a federal marine park. That last detail shapes everything else: before a photographer is involved, every visitor pays two separate charges to two separate authorities, and the park sets the rules for where and when a camera goes.

Two charges, two authorities

The first charge belongs to the island. The Administração do Distrito Estadual de Fernando de Noronha, run by the state of Pernambuco, collects the Taxa de Preservação Ambiental (TPA) from every person who is not a resident, and its official table sets R$105.79 for a one-day stay in 2026. The total grows with each day of the stay rather than being a flat daily rate, and the administration's page lists every length from 1 to 30 days.

The TPA can be paid online before boarding or on arrival, and the administration says a card issued abroad can only be used at the airport counter. Days added to a stay without prior authorisation are charged at double the rate, so book the session inside the dates you declared.

The second charge belongs to the park. The Parque Nacional Marinho de Fernando de Noronha is managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), and ICMBio's ticket table lists a full ticket of R$384 under Portaria ICMBio nº 4.423 of 14 October 2025, with a separate, lower rate for Brazilians. ICMBio's visitor page says the ticket is valid for 10 days and covers the park's public-use areas, while guided services are hired separately. The park adjusts the ticket each year in the last months of the year, so check both pages again in the week you fly.

What the park allows a camera to do

Photography is a listed activity in the park, not a tolerated one. The park's management plan, revised by Portaria ICMBio nº 2.761 in 2024, names photography and filming among the activities of the Golfinhos–Sancho area, next to swimming, diving and contemplation. The same plan says commercial photography and filming in the park are authorised by ICMBio.

How that works in practice is set by ICMBio's Instrução Normativa nº 12/2025. ICMBio's summary says capturing images in a federal conservation unit needs no authorisation in a place and at an hour open to visitors, and that a special authorisation, issued free of charge, covers anything outside them. A couple photographed on the Sancho clifftop in visiting hours is the first case. A shoot before the park opens, on a closed trail or with a set built on the sand is the second, and it is requested through the federal image-capture authorisation service well before the date.

Sancho, Porcos and the Atalaia

Baía dos Porcos is the place a tide table decides. The management plan describes it as an area visitable only at low tide, when a sandy floor of rock platforms and small pools is exposed, so we fix the session to that day's low water rather than to a clock time. ICMBio's visitor page says the Atalaia pool takes a limited number of people each day because of its carrying capacity, so a photo there depends on a slot rather than on the photographer. Trails in the park are walked in groups of 2 to 15 people, under the same plan.

Drones over the marine park

A drone shot of Sancho is the picture most couples ask for and the one with the most paperwork behind it. Under DECEA's ICA 100-40, in force since 1 July 2026, every drone flight in Brazil needs authorisation in SARPAS, and the airport on the main island is ringed by a flight restriction zone that adds a Termo de Coordenação and at least 4 calendar days' notice. ANAC's RBAC nº 100 keeps the drone at least 30 m horizontally from anyone who has not agreed to the flight, which on a busy beach usually means the water side or an early hour. Light, sunset and the time zone

Fernando de Noronha keeps UTC−2 all year, one hour ahead of Brasília, and that hour is the most common cause of a missed sunset. The sun sets between 18:01 in mid-October and 18:29 in mid-January, according to US Naval Observatory tables for 2026, and the day changes length by less than 40 minutes across the year because the island sits under 4 degrees south of the Equator.

The light turns harsh within an hour of sunrise, so we start a session about 45 minutes before sunset, or at sunrise for a beach the afternoon crowds fill. Rain on the island tends to come between March and July, and the swell that rolls into the northern beaches is usually strongest in the southern summer, so tell us the month and we choose the side of the island to match.
