Honeymoon photography

Brazilian honeymoons tend to happen in places with rules of their own. Fernando de Noronha charges every visitor a daily environmental tax, the Taxa de Preservação Ambiental, set by the Pernambuco state administration, and much of the archipelago sits inside a federal marine park managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). A photographer flying in pays the same daily tax, so a Noronha session carries travel costs that are quoted in writing before booking. Trancoso, Jericoacoara and Ilha Grande have no such tax on the photographer, but each pousada still decides whether an outside photographer may work on its grounds.

Schedule the session on the second or third day. The first day is usually lost to travel, and by the last day there is often a sunburn and a suitcase to pack. Leaving a free day after the session matters most on the coast from Salvador to Natal, where the rains usually concentrate between April and July, and in Rio de Janeiro, where summer storms build in the afternoon: if the weather makes the location unusable, the session moves to another day at no charge.

Wear what you would wear to a good dinner on holiday. Linen, light cotton and solid colours handle humidity better than synthetic fabrics, and a veil, a jacket or the rings can appear for a few frames if you pack them. Couples who married in Brazil sometimes book the honeymoon session in a second destination, such as Fernando de Noronha after a wedding in Trancoso, so the two sets of pictures look different.
