Engagement photos
An engagement session is a 30-minute pre-wedding portrait session, priced from $180, for couples who are already engaged and need pictures for save-the-dates, invitations and a wedding website. What separates it from a couple session is purpose: each of the 20 edited photos is cropped horizontally and vertically for print and screens, at least one frame leaves empty sky or sand for the names and the date, and the location is chosen for what the stationery has to say. Brazilian couples call the same thing an ensaio pré-wedding.

A photoshoot at Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf: the rules, the hours and the light
Christ the Redeemer sits inside a federal park and Sugarloaf on a private cable-car concession, so each summit sets its own rules on hours, tripods, drones and commercial photography.

For couples planning a destination wedding in Brazil, the session often happens on the planning trip, when you fly in to see the venue in Trancoso, Búzios or Paraty. Doing it then serves two purposes: the save-the-dates show guests the place they are being invited to, and you learn how the light, the heat and the wind behave there before the wedding day. Photographing in a different season also gives a second set of pictures, so a winter engagement session in Gramado looks nothing like a summer wedding on the Bahia coast.
Timing follows the stationery. Save-the-dates for destination weddings go out earlier than for local ones, because guests flying to Brazil need time to book flights and rooms, so the session usually falls six to twelve months before the date. One outfit suits 30 minutes, so choose the one that matches the tone of the invitation. If your wedding venue is the location, ask its coordinator in writing whether an outside photographer can work there on a non-event day.
The session is also practice. Couples who have been directed once are easier to photograph on the wedding day, because they already know which side they prefer and how it feels to be asked to walk, stop and look at each other. If no wedding is being planned, the couple session is the honest choice and costs less; if the wedding has already happened, the honeymoon session is the one to book. The engagement gallery is delivered within 7 days.
Questions about engagement photos
When should an engagement session take place before a destination wedding in Brazil?
An engagement session for a destination wedding in Brazil usually takes place six to twelve months before the date, because guests flying in need time to book flights and rooms. Many couples combine it with the planning trip to see the venue in Trancoso, Búzios or Paraty.
Can engagement photos be taken at our wedding venue?
Engagement photos can be taken at your wedding venue in Brazil if the venue agrees to a visit on a non-event day. Ask the venue coordinator in writing, because a pousada or a farmhouse booked for your wedding may be hosting another event on the day you want the engagement session.
How many outfits fit in an engagement session?
One outfit suits a 30-minute engagement session, chosen to match the tone of the invitation rather than everyday clothes. An outfit change needs a longer engagement session, quoted in writing before booking, and a pousada room or a car nearby to change in.
Is an engagement session worth booking if the wedding photographer is different?
An engagement session is worth booking even with a different wedding photographer, because couples who have been directed once relax faster on the wedding day. The engagement session also gives you pictures in a different season and place from the wedding, rather than a rehearsal of the same set.
