Photographers in Maceió

Maceió is the capital of Alagoas and the base for a coast that runs north through Ipioca, São Miguel dos Milagres, Porto de Pedras and Maragogi. Most of that shoreline lies inside the Área de Proteção Ambiental Costa dos Corais, the largest federal marine conservation unit in Brazil, managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). Its reefs are the reason people come: at low tide they form natural pools of clear, shallow water a short boat ride from the sand.

Each pool has its own rules, and they come from different desks. In the city itself, the Prefeitura de Maceió’s Portaria nº 013/2025 confines tour jangadas to one stretch of Pajuçara, between the fire brigade’s water-rescue base and the Maré Mansa restaurant, and requires their parked sails not to block the sea view. In the north of the city, the Ipioca pools were opened in 2022 under a quota of 22 jangadas a day for the Tatu pool, and five catamarans and eight speedboats for the Português.

Further north, the Galés de Maragogi are governed by ICMBio’s Instrução Normativa nº 08 of 2009, which caps them at 720 visitors a day, keeps boats on fixed moorings, sends them out of the zone at high tide and bans sound systems and food sales on the reef. Between Maceió and Maragogi, the Rota Ecológica dos Milagres strings together quieter pools reached by jangada and the Rio Tatuamunha, where manatee visits are run by authorised community guides.

Clients here are couples, honeymooners and families, many staying in Pajuçara and Ponta Verde or in the pousadas of São Miguel dos Milagres. The coast faces east and southeast, so the sun rises over the reef as early as about 4:50 in November, and sets inland between about 17:10 and 17:50.

Locations

Popular photography locations in Maceió

The best hour at each, and what a professional session there needs in the way of a permit — with the issuing authority and the date it was last checked.

  • Piscinas naturais da Pajuçara

Tide pools on the reef off the city beach of Pajuçara, reached by jangada from a single boarding stretch. The municipal rule that parked sails must not block the sea view keeps the line of jangadas on the sand as one of the city’s classic backdrops.

    Best time
Sunrise on a morning low tide, with the sun coming up over the reef
    Permit
No permit for a photo session; the jangada crossing is paid on the beach, and tour jangadas board only on the Pajuçara stretch set by Portaria nº 013/2025

  • Piscinas naturais de Ipioca (Tatu and Português)

Two reef pools off Ipioca, in the north of Maceió, opened to tourism in 2022 after an ICMBio inspection. The Tatu pool takes jangadas only; the Português takes up to five catamarans and eight speedboats, which keeps both quieter than Pajuçara.

    Best time
The low tide of the day, booked with an authorised operator
    Permit
Inside the APA Costa dos Corais; only operators authorised by the city and ICMBio may run the trips, with 22 jangadas a day at the Tatu pool

  • Galés de Maragogi

The best known of the Alagoas reef pools, off Maragogi on the northern coast of the state. Catamarans moor on fixed buoys and must leave at high tide, so time on the reef is short and set by the operator’s permit.

    Best time
The low-tide window, before boats must leave the zone
    Permit
Capped at 720 visitors a day under ICMBio IN 08/2009; underwater photo services need ICMBio authorisation and a municipal permit, and sound systems are banned

  • Piscinas de São Miguel dos Milagres

Small reef pools off the beaches of São Miguel dos Milagres, on the Rota Ecológica, reached by jangada rather than catamaran. The pousadas here are spread out and low-rise, and the beaches in front of them stay quiet.

    Best time
Morning low tide, by jangada from the beach
    Permit
Inside the APA Costa dos Corais, in a zone ICMBio lists for jangada trips, free diving and bathing; no permit for a personal session

  • Rio Tatuamunha, Porto de Pedras

A mangrove river where ICMBio’s manatee conservation work meets community-based tourism. The trip is a slow jangada ride with a local guide, and the animals set the distance.

    Best time
Morning, on the guided manatee trip
    Permit
Visits run only through authorised community providers, under ICMBio rules specific to the manatee

Timing

When to photograph in Maceió

The pools exist only around low tide, and they are clearest on the spring tides near the new and full moon; on the quarter-moon days the water stays deep and the boat trips run shorter. The wetter months on the Alagoas coast usually fall between about April and July, with short heavy showers and stirred-up water; September to March brings calmer seas and the busiest boat schedules. Sunrise ranges from about 4:50 in November to 5:37 in June.

Questions about photography in Maceió

How many people can visit the Galés de Maragogi each day?

Up to 720 a day. ICMBio’s Instrução Normativa nº 08 of 2009 caps the Galés de Maragogi, in the APA Costa dos Corais north of Maceió, at 720 visitors a day spread across fixed boat moorings, and requires boats to leave the zone at high tide. A photo session there rides on an operator’s booking.

Where do jangadas leave for the Pajuçara pools in Maceió?

From one stretch of Pajuçara beach. The Prefeitura de Maceió’s Portaria nº 013/2025 limits tour jangadas to the sand between the fire brigade’s water-rescue battalion and the Maré Mansa restaurant, with fishing boats kept at Ponta Verde. The crossing to the natural pools is timed to the low tide.

Can a photographer shoot underwater at the Galés de Maragogi?

Only an authorised one. ICMBio’s Instrução Normativa nº 08 of 2009 requires prior ICMBio authorisation, a municipal permit and an underwater photography course for anyone running underwater photo services at the Galés de Maragogi. A session photographer from Maceió shoots from the boat and the surface instead.
