The best time for photos in Brazil: a month-by-month guide, region by region

When to book a photo session in Brazil: the Northeast rainy season, Rio’s summer storms, Gramado’s winter, the Amazon’s high and low water, Bonito, the Pantanal and the Lençóis lagoons, in one table.

The best time for a photo session in Brazil is not one season but a different window in each region, and a 30-minute couple session, priced from $150, can be planned for good light somewhere in the country every month of the year. Brazil spans more than 35 degrees of latitude, from the equatorial Amazon to the temperate south, so "summer" in Rio, "winter" in Gramado and "the dry season" in Maranhão are three different months.

The month-by-month table

Northeast coast (Salvador to Natal)September to MarchApril to JulyThe rainy season on the coast
Lençóis MaranhensesMay to SeptemberOctober to DecemberLagoons fill from the rain and dry out
Rio de Janeiro and the Southeast coastApril to OctoberDecember to MarchSummer heat and afternoon storms
Gramado and the southern highlandsJune to August, and the Natal Luz season—Cold, clear winter days and Christmas lights
Amazon around ManausBoth seasons, for different pictures—High water mid-year, low water near October
BonitoMay to SeptemberDecember to MarchClearest rivers in the dry months
PantanalJuly to OctoberDecember to MarchRain and flooding from October to March
Iguaçu FallsAll year—High water is dramatic but can close the walkway

The table is a starting point. Each line below explains it, with the source.

The Northeast coast: avoid April to July

On the coast from Salvador to Natal, the dry months are the long Brazilian summer and the rainy season falls in the southern autumn and early winter. The water agency of the state of Paraíba, AESA, says in its February 2026 climate bulletin that the coastal region's rainiest period begins in April and runs until July. The same pattern holds for Recife, Porto de Galinhas and Maceió, a few hundred kilometres along the same coast.

For photos, September to March brings the clearest skies and the calmest sea, which is what the natural pools at Porto de Galinhas and the beaches around Salvador need. A session in May or June is still possible, because showers there tend to be short, but we keep a second date free in the same trip. Carnival, the busiest week of the year in Salvador and Recife, falls with Carnival Tuesday on 9 February 2027.

The Lençóis Maranhenses: the rain is the point

The one place where the rainy season is the reason to go is the Lençóis Maranhenses. The lagoons form from the rain of the first half of the year, and the ICMBio Plano de Uso Público for the park says the landscape is at its fullest from May, with lagoons full and settled weather, that visits peak in July, and that the season stretches into September and October with the wind. Our lagoon season guide has the month-by-month detail.

Rio de Janeiro and the Southeast: summer storms

Rio's summer, December to March, is hot, humid and broken by heavy storms that usually build in the afternoon and pass within an hour or two. The city's own weather service, Alerta Rio, publishes radar and warnings that we check on the morning of every session. Summer also puts the sun high early, so a beach session at Arpoador or Copacabana works at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset, not in between.

From April to October the air is drier and clearer, the light is lower and warmer all day, and the beaches are emptier outside July's school holidays. That is the window we suggest for Rio de Janeiro when the dates are flexible.

Gramado and the South: the winter Brazilians travel for

In Rio Grande do Sul the seasons run the other way from the Northeast. Winter, June to August, is cold by Brazilian standards, with clear, crisp days in the Serra Gaúcha, and it is the season Brazilian couples choose for coats, scarves and fondue in Gramado. The other peak is the Natal Luz festival, whose 2026–27 edition runs from 22 October 2026 to 17 January 2027 according to its official site, when the town is lit at night and booked out at weekends.

The Amazon: high water and low water

Around Manaus, the rivers rise and fall by many metres each year, and the photographs change with them. The Serviço Geológico do Brasil (SGB) reported the Rio Negro at Manaus at 26.55 m on 11 August 2026 and falling, and on 1 September 2026 it projected 12.31 m to 16.50 m for 31 October, the bottom of the dry season. High water from about May to July lets canoes glide through the flooded forest; low water around October exposes beaches on the Rio Negro. Both make good sessions, so we ask which picture you want before choosing the month.

Bonito and the Pantanal

Bonito's tourism secretariat says its rivers are clearest from May to September, with winter water at about 20 °C, and that it rains in summer, when the sun lights the Gruta do Lago Azul best. For a family session in the water, the dry months win; read more about Bonito.

The Pantanal follows the same rhythm on a larger scale. Embrapa Pantanal says the region's hydrology is driven by rain from October to March, with the flood moving slowly down the plain, which is why the dry months from about July to October are when wildlife gathers at the remaining water and the roads stay open.

The Iguaçu Falls: every month, different water

The Iguaçu Falls are photographable all year, and their volume depends on rain far upstream rather than on a fixed season. Urbia Cataratas' flood protocol closes the walkway over the river when the flow passes 8.5 million litres per second and keeps rising, which happened on 11 October 2026. Our Iguaçu Falls photo guide explains what still works on those days.

Frequently asked questions

When is the rainy season on the Northeast coast of Brazil?
The rainy season on the Northeast coast of Brazil, from Salvador to Natal, usually runs from April to July, the period the Paraíba state water agency AESA names as the coast’s rainiest. September to March is the drier stretch, and it is when we recommend booking a beach photo session in Porto de Galinhas, Maceió or Salvador.
What is the best month for photos in Rio de Janeiro?
The best months for a photo session in Rio de Janeiro are usually April to October, when the air is drier, the light is lower and the summer storms have passed. From December to March Rio is hot and has heavy afternoon storms, so sessions there are planned for sunrise or the last hour of light.
When are the Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons full for photos?
The Lençóis Maranhenses lagoons are fullest from May, with visits peaking in July and the season running into September and October, according to ICMBio’s Plano de Uso Público for the park. A photo session in the Lençóis Maranhenses between October and December often finds many lagoons shallow or dry.
When is the low-water season in the Amazon near Manaus?
The low-water season on the Rio Negro at Manaus bottoms out around October: the Serviço Geológico do Brasil projected 12.31 m to 16.50 m for 31 October 2026, down from 26.55 m in August. A photo session near Manaus at low water can use the river beaches, while high water mid-year floods the forest.
