Personal brand photography

Personal brand photography in Brazil is a 30-minute shoot of portraits, working scenes and details for people who sell their own expertise, priced from $220 for 20 edited photographs delivered within 7 days. It is booked by nutritionists, lawyers with an Instagram following, designers, coaches, architects and founders who need a homepage banner, a speaker-bio portrait and enough varied frames to post for months, instead of one profile picture cropped five ways.

Planning runs backwards from where the files will live. Before the day, the photographer studies your website and grid, asks what you are launching next, and drafts a shot list: a wide portrait with room for text, tighter portraits for profiles, you at the laptop or the drawing table, you explaining something to a small group, and close-ups of hands, tools and products. Thirty minutes covers one setting in one outfit. In São Paulo that is often a coworking space on Avenida Paulista or a café in Pinheiros; in Rio de Janeiro, a terrace in Botafogo or a cobbled street in Santa Teresa. Each of those is a private business or a residential street, so the owner’s agreement comes first. A second setting or outfit is added as extra time, quoted in writing.

Brazilian law matters more here than with a family shoot, because these pictures are meant to sell. Article 20 of the Código Civil (Lei 10.406/2002) allows a person to stop the commercial use of their image when it was not authorised, so a client, colleague or student who appears recognisably signs an image-use release before any frame goes into an ad. Uses beyond your own site and social channels — paid campaigns, a book cover, packaging for a product someone else sells — are agreed in writing before the shoot, not after.

Light decides the hour. In Salvador, Rio de Janeiro or Fortaleza the first two hours after sunrise and the last two before sunset keep skin even and nobody shiny; in São Paulo a grey sky is an ally, because the diffuse light flatters faces both indoors and out. This is not a headshot session: a headshot is a consistent close portrait for LinkedIn, while personal brand photography is a range of scenes. If you need short vertical video as well, the social content service adds clips.

Questions about personal brand photography

How is personal brand photography different from a headshot?

Personal brand photography produces a varied set of 20 edited pictures in 30 minutes — you mid-consultation, at the studio bench, presenting to a small group — plus portraits and product details. A headshot session produces tight, consistent portraits for a profile. One feeds a website and months of posts; the other feeds a LinkedIn avatar and a company team page.

Where does a personal brand shoot in São Paulo or Rio usually happen?

A personal brand shoot in São Paulo often happens in a coworking space on Avenida Paulista, a café in Pinheiros or the client’s own studio; in Rio de Janeiro, a terrace in Botafogo or a quiet street in Santa Teresa is common. Cafés and coworkings are private businesses, so get the manager’s yes before arriving with a laptop, props and a photographer.

Can personal brand photos be used in paid ads or on a book cover?

Personal brand photos can go into paid ads, a book cover or packaging when that use is agreed in writing before the 30-minute shoot. Article 20 of Brazil’s Código Civil lets a person stop the commercial use of their image without authorisation, so any client, colleague or student who appears recognisably in the frame signs an image-use release too.

What time of day suits a personal brand shoot in a hot Brazilian city?

A personal brand shoot in Salvador, Rio de Janeiro or Fortaleza looks best in the first two hours after sunrise or the last two before sunset, when light is soft and nobody is visibly sweating. In São Paulo an overcast day is an advantage indoors and out, because diffuse light flatters skin and keeps a window-lit coworking even.
