Restaurant & food photography

Restaurant food photography in Brazil is a three-hour session at a restaurant or bar photographing its dishes, drinks, kitchen, team and dining room, priced from $450 for 30 edited photographs delivered within 5 business days. It is booked by restaurants, botecos, bakeries, cocktail bars and hotel kitchens for a new menu, an opening, a website, iFood and Instagram — from a tasting-menu kitchen in Jardins in São Paulo to a botequim in Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro or a moqueca house in Rio Vermelho in Salvador.

The session happens before opening or on the day the restaurant closes, which in many Brazilian kitchens is Monday. That is the only way the kitchen can plate one dish at a time for the camera and the photographer can move a table to the window, where most food is photographed. The dish list and plating order are agreed with the chef in advance so everything arrives fresh: salads, foams, ice cream and anything that wilts go first; moqueca, feijoada, picanha and rice dishes, which hold their heat and shine, come later. Signature dishes get more than one angle, and the rest of the time covers drinks, hands at work on the line, the team and the room.

Thirty finished photographs sounds small next to a full menu, and that is deliberate. A restaurant usually needs strong pictures of the eight to twelve dishes that sell, not a catalogue of every plate, and a 3-hour session spent on fewer dishes produces images that hold up on a printed menu, a delivery-app thumbnail and a phone screen alike. Files come in square, portrait and landscape crops; iFood and the other delivery apps each publish their own image rules, so check them before the day.

The chef plates as for a guest, and the photographer adjusts angle, garnish and light at the table. A separate food stylist is worth adding for packaged products, cookbooks and advertising campaigns, and is quoted on its own. For a pousada or hotel with several outlets, pousada and hotel photography covers the whole property; for short vertical video of the kitchen and the bar, the social content service adds clips.

Questions about restaurant & food photography

When should restaurant food photography be scheduled?

Restaurant food photography works best before opening or on the restaurant’s closed day, when the kitchen can plate one dish at a time for the camera and a table can be moved to the window. A 3-hour shoot squeezed into a Saturday lunch service in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro gives rushed plates and waiters crossing every frame.

How many dishes fit into a 3-hour food photography session?

A 3-hour food photography session yields 30 finished photographs, which usually means eight to twelve signature dishes, a few drinks, the kitchen at work and the dining room. Send the dish list ahead and plate in the agreed order — salads, foams and ice cream first, moquecas, feijoada and grilled meats later — so each one arrives fresh.

Can restaurant food photography be used on iFood and other delivery apps?

Restaurant food photography is delivered in square, portrait and landscape crops, so one session can fill the printed menu, the website, Instagram and delivery apps such as iFood. Each app sets its own image rules and changes them, so check the current requirements before the shoot and tell the photographer which channel drives most orders.

Does a restaurant in Salvador or São Paulo need a food stylist?

A restaurant shoot in Salvador or São Paulo rarely needs a separate food stylist: the chef plates as for a guest, and the photographer adjusts angle, garnish and light at the table. A stylist earns their fee on packaged products, cookbooks and advertising campaigns, where every crumb is placed, and is quoted apart from restaurant food photography.
