Proposal videography
A proposal video in Brazil is a marriage proposal filmed from a hidden position and edited into a film of 2 to 3 minutes, priced from $450 for 90 minutes on location and delivered within 2 weeks. The film keeps what a photograph cannot: the walk to the spot, the moment one of you kneels, the words if they can be heard, and the seconds after the answer, when most of the feeling actually shows. The last part of the 90 minutes is a short session of the two of you together, filmed openly once the secret is out.

A proposal on film, from Arpoador to the dunes

Proposal photography is a separate booking with a different result — edited stills rather than a film. Some people book both, which means two people hiding at one spot, and their positions are planned together so neither lands in the other’s frame. Hiding is the craft: the videographer arrives early at an agreed mark with a clear line of sight, usually passing as a tourist with a camera, and the person proposing sends a live location as they approach. Sound is the hard part, because the camera is far away and the surf at Arpoador or Ipanema can bury the words; a small microphone hidden in the clothing of the person proposing solves that, if it is agreed beforehand.
Light decides the time, and Brazil’s geography matters here. Most of the Atlantic coast faces east, so on a beach in Salvador, Natal or Porto de Galinhas the sun climbs out of the sea at dawn and goes down behind the land. A proposal that wants the sun in the frame at the end of the day needs one of the west-facing exceptions: the rocks of Arpoador in Rio, where crowds applaud the sunset, or the dunes of Jericoacoara. Elsewhere, sunrise is when the water lights up and the beach is empty enough to hide a camera.
Some of the most asked-for spots belong to someone. The Christ the Redeemer platform is inside the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, managed by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio): filming there during visiting hours needs no authorisation under ICMBio’s Instrução Normativa nº 12/2025, while an early or after-hours proposal needs a free special authorisation that the park answers within 5 business days. Sugarloaf Mountain and private beach clubs set their own rules, so name the spot when you book. The film is cut to licensed music, raw clips are not included unless agreed in writing, and if lightning or a closed site makes the location unusable, the proposal moves to a new date at no charge.
Questions about proposal videography
How is a proposal video different from proposal photography?
A proposal video records the moment in motion and sound — the approach, the kneel, the words and the reaction — and is edited into a film of 2 to 3 minutes. Proposal photography is a separate booking that delivers still photographs. Booking both puts two people in hiding at the same spot, so their positions are planned together beforehand.
Will the proposal video pick up what I say?
A proposal videographer films from far enough away that your partner does not notice the camera, and at that distance wind and waves at a spot like Arpoador can bury the words. If the question itself matters to you, a small microphone can be hidden in the clothing of the person proposing; agree it with the videographer in advance so it can be fitted without giving anything away.
Can a proposal be filmed at Christ the Redeemer in Rio?
The Christ the Redeemer platform sits inside the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, run by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). Under ICMBio’s Instrução Normativa nº 12/2025, filming a proposal video in a place and at an hour open to visitors needs no authorisation; filming outside opening hours needs ICMBio’s free special image-capture authorisation, which the park answers within 5 business days.
What time of day suits a proposal video on the Brazilian coast?
Most of Brazil’s Atlantic coast faces east, so on a beach in Salvador, Natal or Porto de Galinhas the sun rises over the sea and sets behind the land. A proposal video wanting the sun in the frame at the end of the day needs a west-facing spot, such as the rocks of Arpoador in Rio or the dunes at Jericoacoara; elsewhere, sunrise is the time the sea lights up.
What happens to a proposal video booking if it rains?
Light rain or an overcast sky does not cancel a proposal video, and grey light can flatter the film. If lightning or a closed site or beach makes the planned location unusable, the terms move the proposal video to a new date at no charge, and the new time is arranged with the person proposing so the surprise is kept.
